When you come to Beaufort don't expect the amenities you would have had at Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejeune.  MCAS Beaufort is a small base with operational squadrons (and soon some training squadrons.)  We share medical with Parris Island at the Naval Hospital which is about 15 minutes from the base.

Beaufort is what you make of it.  There are some MCCS events and things to do on base but there is a lot more out in town especially if you have kids (see "For Kids" section.)  Beaufort is a quanit town with wonderful people and the town is very supportive of military families.  We lived here for a long time both before kids and with kids and we hope to retire here one day.  We have many "locals" that we consider close friends that make it worth coming back to.

The only bad thing about the location is that you are 5 hours from Atlanta and 5 hours from Orlando...the closest "big cities" are Savannah GA 1 hour away and Charleston SC 1.25 hr away.  Charlotte NC is a little over 4 hours.  If you hate "small town" you will hate Beaufort.  I am from Boston and as much as this Northern girl loves a big city I fell in love with this small Southern town.  You might be here for 3 years or 10...just find the best in it.

I loved it there!  I always felt completely safe on and off post.  I made many good friends.  Among my favorite places were the shops on Bay St. the public library downtown and the coffee shop in Port Royal.  I would love to return to Beaufort.  The only room for improvement would have to be the public school system.

The air station has a movie theater, 7 day store & a mini exchange, mainly stocked w/uniform supplies. They also have a GNC & barber shop in store. The ?¢‚Ǩ?ìstrip mall?¢‚Ǩ¬ù located next to the 7 day has an atm vestibule, food court (pizza, sandwiches), dry cleaners w/alterations, post office & the MCFTB (Marine Corps family team building). A bowling alley is on base as well as a subway. The officers club is open to all for lunch.
